dynamo trouble

Post by brinky »

I'm still having dynamo trouble, the battery wasn't charging so I checked the brushes and everything else in the dynamo for any obvious visual damage, the regulator was all rusty so changed that too. Put it back together the voltmeter still doesn't move to charge but does go to discharge if I switch the lights on.
I have done a test on the dynamo which gives no reading at all.
I know the fan belt is new, but was wondering how tight it should be, I have it at the tightest possition and can still press it about an inch down, is this normal ?
I know dynamos are about £60 to buy or is it worth getting the Lucus one repaired ?
Maybe theres someother checks I can do...

Thanks

Are you sure the gage is wired in the correct polarity? Use a multi meter to test the voltage at the battery and see if you are getting 13.5 to 14 + volts. If so, the gage is wired backward. If you are only bouncing around 12 Volts, the system is not charging.

The Dyno will run like a motor if it is good. Does it smell like someone has let the smoke out? If so, the windings are probably bad. Dandy Dave!

Fan belt tension.
Bosch, a maker of good belts, state that a fan belt, on its longest run, should deflect by about one centimetre when applying moderate pressure to it. Moderate pressure can be defined as that applied to ones arm whilst firmly rubbing it after it's been bashed against sundry lumps of unforgiving metal.
Dynamos.
It follows that the brushes must be in contact with a clean armature. Clean it [armature] with dry 1200 wet and dry and finish with a wipe of metho. The brushes can get stuck in their holders because of gunk build-up. As well, the springs pressing them down can lose their tension. Gently bending them to increase pressure sometimes cures the problem. Seriously worn brushes will allow the springs to rest on the holders instead of pressing the brushes onto the armature.

If it has not been in use for sometime, it may just need to be "FLASH" I had just done one a few days ago, he had replace the wiring the reg box and a new battery, I took the gen to bit's to have a look brushes were down but not too bad, everything looked OK but it had been siting for some years, he wanted me to order new gen at £80 I said wait....let's have a go at this, flash it and the old girl was back to life ammeter moving the right way to charge, giving the right amps.
