Agriline Tach Cable

Post by whirly »

My tach drive went out last week and I ordered one from Agriline. It look exactly like the one I took off but they said it needed their cable # 5267. SOOOO ... since freight is a ball buster to the US I had them toss one in - along with a few small doodads.

Congrats to Agriline the package arrived in 4 days. However, and the reason for this post, aside from the Agriline cable being 58 inches as opposed to the 49 inch cable already installed, I don't see any reason to go through the aggravation of changing the cable if I don't have to. I did check that the old cable would still drive the proofmeter which led to the deduction the drive was fubar.

I have inspected both ends and the twist on the cable and they appear to be exactly the same except for the length. I had originally thought that the drive end might be a different threading but the old cable fits just fine.

Before I start him up in the morning is there any real difference in the cables besides the length?

It'll work fine - for a while...
The extra length will cause the cable to sag, and eventually (probably not long at all) it'll go the same as the other one, you really need it to be as straight as possible, sags and kinks will cause it to drag against the outer cover and this will eventually be the cause of it giving way, as I have learnt. But finding a supplier of the right length cable, well that's another matter all together, may be easier to get one made up!

My question is, why do Agriline sale them 9 inches longer then they should be, I have use them (Agriline) for parts for years and many parts you will find do not fit very well and you have to modifier them, Its time they look into it...!

It will fit for the Power Major, I think.

Mystery Solved :!:

The old (short) cable worked just fine with the new Tach Drive from Agriline. I have no idea why Agriline clearly states that their cable is required but ... at least for now it really isn't. I will say this, the extra length would make the installation easier.

Be careful with Agriline tach cable. I ordered the cable and its lenght was a degree of injection pump lenght more than the existing one. Only part of the story, wire handedness was for a clockwise tachometer instead of anticlockwise one. It is running short time, but will break in no time. I refixed the upper part of the old cable and installed it.

I had the tach cable removed from my early Super Major at the weekend. Usual set up, pneumatic governed injector pump and dials on top of the fuel tank. The outer cable was 57 inches, the inner almost 58 inches. Seems like Agriline have sent you the correct cable 5267 for a Power Major. Don't understand why your tractor has a 9 inch excess ? Are your dials on the tank top, or down at the early Major position ?

The tach is installed on the top of the tank as usual. I have the better part of 20 hrs on this new tach drive with the old cable and everything is working properly.
