Replacing PTO seal, and have a query!

Post by Nick »

I am replacing the pto seal on my major, and ive got to the point where ive got to remove the old seal from the bearing retainer. Are the new seals different looking compared to the originals? If I look into where the pto shaft goes from the outside, i can see the old knackered rubber of the old seal, then what looks like a flat piece of steel, is this the back of the seal? Because its stopping me getting it out!
Oh yay, look, another seized bolt! Lets get a hammer.....and some kano.....and some cider!

Hi Nick
Depending on where you got the new seal they can look different from the old ones  . The original ford one had a shiny metal outer case with a capped end like you see. the new one that you have probably is what looks like black rubber. you have to remove that whole shiny part of the old seal to get your new seal to fit in the casting :) .

Yes, I have now done it, had to smash it out with a hammer and screwdriver. Its all back together now, the shaft wasnt rusty at all, but the old seal was completely knackered, it has broken up into pieces!
All ive got to do now is put some fresh oil in the backend, but what grade does it take?

The 4th sticky topic from the top is "Fordson Major Oil Specifications. Source Ford Motor Company".

And just out of curiosity .... did you install the E1ADKN7297A (double lip - 52/63/6) or 2 of the E1ADKN7297B (Single Lip - 53/63/6) seals??

And can anyone explain the difference between the two or the value of one over the other?
