Super Major Brakes

Post by supermajor61 »

I'm just about to fit new linings to my Super Major Brakes. Am used to relining brake shoes using hollow brass rivits ,but these aluminium rivits are solid. Do you just crush them in a vice, or is there a better way ??
Any tips about how to fit these linings would be appreciated.

When I was maintaining trucks I used this tool:

It will both punch out the rivets in the old lining and set the new rivets with just a LARGE hammer.

SkyGeek dot com has them - part # is ATS-W403 - $17.00

Thanks Whirly, it looks a good tool, but i haven't seen anything like it in Britain. Where these type of disc brakes fitted to other Tractors and industrial machinery , or is it a Ford special tool that i'm looking for ??

Actually the tool design is at least as old as I am, so like me it's not too special.

On the UK eBay there is one up for auction ... item3376b248b5.

Good Day Supermajor61

To partly answer your question about what other tractors had these type of brakes, International Harvester fitted these dry, multi-plate type brake discs to their B414, B434 etc range of tractors.

Dont smack the rivets to hard after its set, you can end up with a split lining :(

Hi whirly, thanks for the riviting advice. I didn't buy the riviter you recommended because it went for $37.51

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221034727605? ... 3D1&_rdc=1

Found a similar on for sale and i bought it for $23.12, still the $17 postage, that Atlantic ocean does bump up the postage.

The question is, what do the extra parts do ? especially the part with the flat on the side.

It will take a few weeks to arrive by sea mail, probably have more questions then.
