Post by oliver17 »

Just wanting to know what oils apart from the 20/30 could be used in the back axle of my fordson major E1A would i be able to use just 15/40 universal oil?

Dear Oliver
I know a number of Major owners who run 15/40w in the back axle (and gearbox). I have found its use causes no problems where all seals have been recently renewed, or are known to be in excellent condition. If the rear axle seals are doubtful (old) though, the "thinner" 15/40w can find a way past the seals easier than the "heavier" grades of oil and lead to those drips down the inside of your rear wheels and other apertures when hot. I am sure the real experts will have a view, but I go for straight SAE40 in my NP Super Major, which "works" for its living.

Just wondering is it possible to use a hydraulic oil in the back axle rather than universal?

Worked a Power Major for 40 years, Always had SAE 90 in transmission & rear axle. No rear axle or hydraulic trouble in that time. 3PTL & remote control
were used extensively for many of those years.
Have been advised not to use EP gear oils in older tractor transmissions.
