59 PM Finally Home

Post by curtsat15 »

Hi guys, I haven't been on in a while, been a busy summer/fall. Got the garden all taken care of for the season and ready for winter. Brought the Old Major home from the parents on Saturday evening. Was a 12 mile ride at 8 mph. Took an hour and a half in -4C. Thankfully not windy, but man was that cold on the hands with a steel steering wheel! That diesel purred like a happy kitten all the way home. The only issue was the liquid filled tires! Any faster than the aforementioned 8 mph, and she started bouncing LOL! The wife followed all the way home in the van with my kids laughing the whole time. The looks on the neighbor's faces as I pulled onto our driveway was priceless! Not too often you see a 53 year old tractor rumble into a quiet residential neighborhood, eh? I've already got most of the electrical apart, and now I know why nothing worked. Voltage regulator main contact is fried inside, main power wires are cooked, and the dolt that had it before my uncle and Dad had cross-wired a couple things when he converted to alternator. After I get that all sorted out, I will move on and tidy up the hydraulics. I got screw-in adjusters loose on the lift arms this summer, but the slides are still seized. Gonna use the 10 ton press at work for those. Full oil change and service will be done as well. Maybe if I have the time and some extra money I`ll replace the gauges too. We`ll see how it goes. Sure looks cool having a 50 odd year old tractor sitting next to a late model mini-van in the garage I tell ya!

Good to hear!

I got my 59PM home from having a replacement clutch fitted the other week. The guy who did the clutch also freed off the drop arms at the back, I think he used Oxy acetylene and sledgehammers but they are working fine now.

Let me know if you find a cheap source for the gauges will you? I'm looking for a set myself.

All the best!

Lovely story. You are going to have some envious neighbours!

How do you ensure that the block doesn't freeze in really cold conditions? Do use a heater?

Found gauges cheap on ebay a while back, don't know if they're still there though. They were in India. And just a regular 50/50 mix of antifreeze/water keeps anything from freezing. Use a couple of space heaters in the garage keep me warm enough to work on the tractor.
