Its time to fix the brakes on the Supermajor,
I'm off on a road run soon, and these brakes need to work.
I've done the left hand side. had to free up the clevis pins and fit new linings.
it brakes nicely to the left now, disappearing into ditches is now not a problem.
The right hand side is the problem, loads of oil over the linings.
going to have to remove the disc brake housing and replace the seal that runs on the bull pinion shaft.
I'm a bit worried that when I remove the brake housing, the bull pinion housing will come with it, and then the differential might fall over.
The other question is about the "o" ring on the differential lock operating rod. Is it a standard imperial "o" ring, or is it a special part ?
Any Supermajor owners out there who have done this job already ?

Re: Super Major brakes.
It’s been a year or two since I was last into one of these but they are not too difficult. The pinion shaft outer bearing can stay in the main housing thus nothing falls out of place. Check to make sure the weep holes are open to keep any small amounts of oil from the disks. I believe the plates and balls are to be reassembled dry and I would recommend installing new springs, its seems to be quite common for new brakes to hang up after a rebuilt. I don’t remember any issues with the o ring so I’m going to guess it’s a stock size.

Re: Super Major brakes.
Brake housing comes away without too much difficulty. The inner flange that holds the pinion shouldn't move.

Re: Super Major brakes.
Thanks Pat and Adrian.
Photos help a lot. Changing the bull pinion seal looks straight forward. The photo is of the left side, my interest is to the right where the diff lock is. Reckon i'll have to remove the bull pinion shaft and diff lock assembly to change the seal on the diff lock operating rod.
Problem is the bull pinion shaft revolves in a ball bearing, and the outer of that is in the bull pinion housing.Pull that out and the diff falls over.
Lets be optimistic, the oil leak will be on the seal, not the "o" ring --------please.
I'll update when it's done.

Re: Super Major brakes.
Apologies. I didn't photograph the right side. Same principle applies, as you know, when removing the brake housing and its cover. I only replaced the bull pinion seal - the O ring wasn't leaking.
According to my repair manual, removing the bull pinion shouldn't be too involved. Remove the oil baffle, then gently withdraw the bull pinion taking care not to dislodge the bull pinion housing and its shims. You can then dismantle the assembly and replace the diff lock actuating lever O ring. Replacing the bull pinion is just a question of getting the splines to line up inside the diff.
Hope that helps.
