Chris,

Only one. Check your dynamo laoding with an amp meter that goes around the cable. It's an easy way to check it.

Hi If the wiring is correct , have you checked the regulator works and polarised the new dynamo for the way your tractor ground/ earth wire is connected. New dynamos aren't just take it from the box and plug and play  . There should be posts on the forum about doing this procedure  .

i did polarise the dynamo by connecting alead to negative on the battery and a quick touch on the small connecter on the dynamo, though not much of a spark

Chris,

I suppose your regulator is located in the bottom of the dashboard and is de bakelite type.
If so, check if all the wires are connected.
Check on the bottom if there’s no broken connection.

You can run the engine while the dash is open. Remove the cap from the regulator and check it while the engine runs at different rpm's. It should go on and of.

You can set the regulator up with the help of an amp and volt meter and a guide that's somewhere on the www.fordsontractorpages.nl site about Lucas parts.

I have to do the job myself, because mine is not disconnecting when idling, but going in the minus. I’ve learned last week the dynamo will work as an engine than. Very bad.
Kind regards, Henk

Often over looked, be sure that the "E" Terminal has a good Earth, Or ground. The regulator will not work without a good and clean Earth. When the engine is sped up, the open contacts will close. These are the ones that push inward. The amp meter may also be bad. You may need to do a continuity on it to conferm that it is good. For this you need a multi meter. Dandy Dave!

Bridge the 2 ammeter terminals with a wire [this will bypass it]. Start the engine and place a volt meter across the battery terminals. Rev the engine and, all being well, the volts should climb to nearly 14 volts. If it does, remove the bridging wire and reverse the ammeter connections. If it does not then suspect the regulator.

Sounds like it is charging. I would be more inclined to check the Amp Meter They get old and fail internally. I've seen the insides rusted right out of them. Dandy Dave!

desperation changed regulator so its new loom dynamo regulater switch and solenoid ampmeter only moves when lights are on then shows discharge so i can only hope it is charging and faulty ampmeter

Try re-polarising you dynamo again. Just one flick, as you said, is not usually enough -- try at least 3.

Chris,

You need this tool. You can clamp it around the loading cable.

Image

Than you know for sure if it's loading or not. If so your ampmeter is ok, if not there's another problem.

Re-check your wiring circuits since you say that the new loom does not use the original colours.
At the starter solenoid there should be 2 extra wires connected to the same terminal that has the main [thick] lead FROM the battery.
One of these wires [yellow in the original diagram] goes to one side of the ammeter with the other side of the ammeter going to terminal A on the voltage regulator.
The other wire from the solenoid [yellow with red tracer in the original diagram] goes to the ignition switch.
Also check that 2 wires from the regulator, D & F, go to the proper terminals on the dynamo.
If/when these wiring circuits are correct, start the engine. Observe the ammeter, and increase the engine revs. The ammeter needle should move from about zero towards full scale deflection as the engine speed increases. If it does, but still registers a discharge, reverse the wires on the ammeter.
As I suggested with my post on the 27th, placing a volt meter across the battery terminals would have indicated whether or not the dynamo was sending a charge to the battery -- irrespective of what the ammeter indicated.

at last, swapped regulator back for the old one started up and the needle moved to charge few more revs and moved further over, put new regulator backon, nothing so i've settled for the old regulator though doesn't move far it does show a charge. thank you everyone for your input its been very very helpful
