Power Steering Cylinder

Hey guys and gals,

I have a 61 super major, with power steering. The cylinder had been leaking, so I brought it in for repair. They charged me 175 bucks to "fix" it, and it still leaks. They replaced a kit in it, but what they didnt do is change the seals on the shaft, you know the ones that a person needs to cut a weld the casing to replace.

Anyways I brought it back and they werent interested in doing that, or refunding any cash, so talking to them is out of the question, they wont get my business again.

Now what I was wondering, has anyone cut the cylinder apart themselves and replaced those seals? I m no pro welder but I can manage fairly decent. If anyone has done this, do you still have the seal numbers?

My next question would be, if no one has done this, is there any other options for a cylinder for these things? Im not interested in bringing it to anyone else quite yet although I know that is an option.

Ive looked around for cylinders and I dont really want to buy a whole complete kit from agriline and ship it over here for a leaky cylinder.

Im not sure how much repairs on these things are supposed to cost, but I figured for 200 some odd bucks it should not be leaking, and im not sure how much more cash i wanna sink into the cylinder!

You should probably post a pic of your cylinder, the standard unit can be fully disassembled to replace the seals without having to cut any welds.
Also keep in mind that this cylinder is 50 years old, I have one that still leaks despite new seals.

I agree. You should not have to weld anything unless the cylinder was cobbled together at some point. I took my factory equiped Cylinder completely apart and put new seals in everything myself. Luckily, mine does not leak much. I put a little oil in it maybe once in three years. Dandy Dave!

Thanks for the replies guys, sorry I didnt get back in here earlier, I went away backwoods camping for a 10 days, it was awesome to not have cell service or internet lol.

What kind of loader do you have on your Major?

I"m looking for a power steering setup for mine, as it's a PITA to turn with the bucket loaded.

Im not sure the loader name off hand. My father told me once but I cant recall. The power steering does make a difference for sure! Im actually going to take the FEL off of my tractor as I have a backhoe and the loader on the fordson doesnt get used at all.

I noticed your from Lloyd. There is a guy from Unity that knows these tractors, and wrecks them and whatnot, you should hit him up for a price on a power steering kit, he probably has one on an old tractor you could fit onto yours, or he could maybe get one for you from agriline. Ive bought stuff from him before, he is awesome to deal with. i still have to get a set of 3 point hitch arms from him, next time I head out that way.

I have never seen a cylinder like that one, it’s probably not a Ford unit, most likely an aftermarket power steering kit that was installed with the loader. Your options are probably slim, find someone that is willing to cut it apart and put it back together again, or replace it, and this may be the cheaper route to go. Several vendors including Agriline sell complete kits that may be easily adaptable to your unit.
