side belt pulley
side belt pulley
I have what i believe is a 1954 Fordson major diesel, quite a while ago the side belt pulley starts up when running tractor and no amount of turning the pulley hand lever will disengage it, i can put my foot on it and it will stop till i remove my foot. Is friction causing the pulley to turn. Thanks for your help. Tom

Re: side belt pulley
My super major seems to do the same in tick over, I just wedge a sponge between the guard and the pulley and that stops it. I wonder if a slightly thicker gasket would help between pulley housing and the gearbox
Re: side belt pulley
Hi all - if you think about it - it's the natural motion makes it wanna turn- cause the gear on the end of the pully is in constant mesh with the gear box drive - even though it's disengaged - its sill on a inline shaft - so it will still turn just via the "vibration" through the drive shaft -

Friesland!!!!!! We love it!!!!!! Stayed in Franecker in Spring, Summer and Winter and it is a beautiful place. We were there for the opening of the sailing season at Harlingen this year and went out in the bay powered by sail!!!! Fantastic. The Tulip Inn there has a great restaurant.

Re: side belt pulley
My pulley was just the same untill after my son took it into work and pressed on a new bearing for me. He says there was quite a lot of burring on the gear which made enough friction to turn the pulley wheel so he cleaned the burring off with emery cloth and its been no trouble since.

Re: side belt pulley
The bearing and seal both need replaced on the side belt pulley of my 1954 major diesel, does anyone know where I can buy them? Thanks
Re: side belt pulley
the size of the pulley bearings are
6406 and 6210
the size of the seal is 64 x 90 x 13mm don't know sizes in inch
i think you can get the bearing and seal at a local bearing/ seal shop

Thanks for the info Janus
Re: side belt pulley
Hi All,
In the Service Letters (circa 1957) you are advised to use 'up to three gaskets' to stop the pulley from free wheeling.
