stuck in reverse

Post by Ian »

So our tractor got stuck in reverse gear. I think the actual gearbox is sound, but the linkage to the gearbox is very worn. The gear stick will spin about and almost come out. I found you can buy replacement gear sticks online complete with housing, but I am struggling to find this part

heres what mine looks like, you can see its really worn

You can repair your stick fairly easily. The reason it spins round is wear on the little locating pin in the top of the housing and possibly wear on the knotch it locates in on the gear stick. Take the housing off and remove the circlip holding the spring on the lever. You will then see what is worn. You can then repair it with a welder and a short piece of round steel for the pin. This must fit snugly in the housing. I would also build up the base of the lever too so this fits tighter into the cup on the selector shaft.

The job should take a couple of hours and save you buying something that is probably as worn as the one you have now. Just think how many times that stick has been shifted in 50+ years. :D

OK, just seen the bit you are after, think the best place to find that is a breakers as I do not think the after market parts people have done anything with that yet. Try Bertie Dunlop, Ron Greet or Malcolm Hipperson, all good dealers.

If all else fails, Take it to a machine and welding shop. Looks like it could be made/ repaired without a lot of trouble. Dandy Dave!

Mine was goobered up pretty bad so I bought the complete assembly from Sparex a couple of years ago. Not inexpensive but it has worked just fine for a few hundred hours now.
