which way up does the spindle thrust bearing go?
Re: which way up does the spindle thrust bearing go?
Ok then, does it matter?
Does a generic thrust bearing have a 'load bearing' face?

Re: which way up does the spindle thrust bearing go?
Hi John,
I don't know the bearing or app (or if the linked pic is accurate) but a straight thrust race which takes no radial load is in theory omnidirectional i.e. both faces must by definition take the same load - although this appears to have an integral seal so presumably the seal o/d has to seat in a housing and therefore can't rotate
if not oil fed presumably it needs some sort of lube on installation.
Hope this makes some sense and helps if not, defining which spindle on what might bring a bit more help
If not RTFM applies !!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I think that makes sense.

Sorry I was a bit vague John, if you'd given a little more info on the application you might have needed a shovel to dig yourself out of the replies as folks hereabouts are not slow passing on help, info, good wishes or sympathy depending on the problem
Hope the job goes well

Re: which way up does the spindle thrust bearing go?
Looks to be the same bearing type I used on mine in which case they are symmetrical so can be fitted either way.

Sorry if I was vague. They are the front axle kingpin/spindle thrust bearings.
One face is grooved, the other is not.
Thanks for the help chaps

Re: which way up does the spindle thrust bearing go?
I have just taken a new thrust bearing out of the box and it is a metal cup shape with a plain hard surface. The metal cup goes into the axle with the plain hard surface facing downward onto the stub axle.

Top, towards axle.

Side View.

Bottom towards stub axle.

Yes, thanks Brian. Hopefully that will help others down the line as well as me now.
