hydrulic oil

can any type of hydrulic oil be used in backend of our little old dextas, iknow
30w or 20/50 is ford/son recomended, , i have been offered 20lt [no name on tub]
and am wondering will this be ok for my little old s/dex ,

The rear axle and hydraulics on a Dexta, in fact on all the range, does not use a hydraulic oil. To me, hydraulic oil means a low viscosity oil like Castrol AWS68 which is used in systems on diggers/loaders/and other hydraulic systems. It is far too light and will not lubricate the gears like the crown wheel and pinion.

My advice would be not to put it in the tractor.

thanks for quick reply , as usual your expert advice is invaluable,
i had done all the usual googleing on engine oil but never really thought
of the oil for the hyd/back end , il get me a tub of engine oil an filter
and get the oil changed , i supose 15/40 oil would be ok as this is
more avaible in my neck of the woods, ihave morris 30wt in the engine
but have to travel along way to get it , sky blue

I am not a lover of 15/40W as I have said before but others have better experiences.

Henrietta, on 20/50W from Morrises gives me an oil pressure of 40 psi when blisteringly hot, at around 1400 rpm. Nuffy has stopped leaking from the crankshaft seal since I stopped using 15/40W oil.

Morrises will deliver to your door if you would like. That is how I get mine.

i understand what your saying about the engine but as it is the hyds i was thinking mybe
the 15/40 would do, as i said i have morriss 30wt with great results in the engine. im in the rep/ireland
and think the cost delivery from uk would be to expensive, the morris oil i have in the engine i got from an outlet in belfast the north ireland , as itravel there about twice a year , ill my be have to wait untill i go up north again

15/40W should be OK in the hydraulics, I still have that in my Nuffield gearbox and hydraulics without problems.

I was told by two different dealers that the lift ,transmission and rear end all use tractor hydraulic oil. That is what I have in my super dextra and it seems to work fine. Hope I am not screwing up!

ithink if it already in the back end and no problems ie slow lift or no lift
at all its probley ok , but if you ever decide to change it , then 20/ 50 or 30wt
is the recommended . although if your like most of us and are offered a bargin
on oil its hard to have to refuse it , i would never comprise on the engine always 30wt
or 20/50 for me others have their own choice. main thing change it regular keep it clean,

If you are running hydraulic oil in your transmission and rear axle you are not lubricating any of the gears or bearings properly. Hydraulic oil has anti wear additives but no real lubrication qualities for the dif and gearbox. 30W, 20/30W, 10/40W, 15/40W, 20/50W or any good quality engine oil like Rotella is OK to use.

It really depends what is classed as "hydraulic oil". It could be Ford 134 oil which can be used in gearbox, transmission and hydraulics but is not what I would call "Hydraulic oil".

Hydraulic oil to me is something that is used in diggers, hedge cutters, and some loaders also anything that uses hydraulic motors. It is little more than water in its viscosity and it contains anti-foaming additives to reduce cavitation as it circulates around the system at high flow rates. Castrol numbering used to be AWS32 and AWS68.
