eratic tickover
after topping 4 acres this week rusty seems unable to tick over evenly its a constant up and down
but when working evens out to normal could this be the something in the injector pump?

Air leakage on the governor / manifold pipes Chris ? or clag in the diaphram / pump control rod - sounds like the fuel side itself is working OK - ISTR something similar being due to the inlet hose softening and collapsing under vacuum, although that was perhaps when the throtle was opened not idling.
Given the heat we've had here today praps Rusty is just hot 'n bothered

Try cleaning the gauze filter on the injection pump.

always the first job brian, also cleaned oil bath fresh oil in made sure hose to manifold nice and tight blew vacume pipes through, but did notice if I pull the stop lever over slowly I can even out the tickover but can feel pressure pulling forward as if its trying to rev up and down if that makes sense, and well spotted rick send that picture in months ago but didn't hear anything then about 3 months later there it was, made her dayBrian wrote:Try cleaning the gauze filter on the injection pump.

OK. Slacken the big nut on the end of the governor housing and turn the centre in a little. See what happens. this is the dampener for the governor and should stop fluctuations. Some tractors have a big governor pipe and a small one from the manifold to the governor, changing them for two big pipes was an answer too.

Its a nice pic Chris, no wonder she's pleased and it sounds as if you have got a fair way into diagnosing your problem
While we are in this area Brian (Pump) Key No 49 on Parts list page 208, the Fuel Stop Screw, mine on the tractor is broken, brought home 'the spare' pump from its 30 year snooze not quite out in the open
and cleaned it up externally only to find this one too is broken (despite my earlier post regarding faster turnover, my starting problem is still there
) it looks like at the end of the thread through the locknut there is a reduced portion and what may have been half a hole for a crosspin to hold while locking - is this right ?
As the locknut is holding it by a thread and a prayer I've not dared try adjusting it to see if it is having any effect, the stop lever has to come over a fair way before killing the engine so perhaps not - my thinking was that perhaps the square pump control rod with the tappets was offset in the stop direction so full fuel wasn't being delivered at start-up, presumably the cold start nudges and holds this to the right against the governor until it develops enough vacuum / force to release it as the engine runs up ?
It may just be poor compression / wear but a pro pump / injector overhaul is not in the budget for the foreseeable

The hole in the end was for a wire and a metal seal so that we could see when naughty people had been cranking the fuel delivery up by allowing the rack to come further back.
It is this screw that controls how far the rack moves. There is then a notch in the shaft that allows the rack further back when you push the excess fuel button and move the stop out of the notch.

Aha, an even more cunning little 'ole than I thought Brian
Do you think its worth my trying to slacken the nut and wind this back out a bit in case the old chap had wound it in sometime for some reason ?
Now I know what it was used for when I make a new one I can attach a twisted wire and lead seal for authenticity (I'm thinking of checking injector delivery by using a rev (rather than RPM) counter as the book of words describes but on the tractor .
BTW will you be going to the Marsham event in August ? hoping I'll have gained enough confidence in her reliability to try the short trek up the 140, don't want to block it instead
