Hi guys I'm new to this forum although not to fordson majors .I have a 1959 Thames trader major engine , I've replaced the liners /sleeves with new ones plus the rubber ring . When I opened the engine shims were beneath the liners that came out. But my new liners are protruding over the block at 0.005 ,which I believe is the max amout allowed , SO my question to you guys is can I now fit the liners without any shims ?.Are the shims required for sealing ? I would really appreciate your opinions on this as I'm nervous about rebuilding it incorrectly,
Paudie
The shims are only to get the height right. If you have one that is a few thousands thick, you can remove it and still have 3 thousands for the gasket to seal. Be sure that use a bolt and clamp of sorts to secure the sleeve all the way down to check the height. Dandy Dave!
Thanks Dandy Dave for the advice and help, ill be rebuilding it in a week or so,I was also advised by a disel mechanic to give the engine block recess a light run by hand with a fine grinding paste to seat the liner to there max potential . The more you speak to people ,there seems to be a limitless supply of info some crazy some fantastic,
