Whining sound from pto

I got the brakes all fixed up . I think ? haven't got the wheels On yet for the test run.they were in reasonable condition just totally seized and gritty. Ill get the floorboards welded a little and get my new mud guards fitted.then I should have a good practical working fordson major . Although there is still a strong WHINE from the pto when engaged which seems to be coming from beneath the bell housing , is there a usual /common reason for this ? I suppose ill have to address this issue . But I want to take a spin with new engine clutch and brakes before I do much more .

Whine tends to mean shot bearing (or bearings). If you can, put the tractor up on axle stands, then run her through the gears and listen. Engage PTO and listen again. If the whine occurs only when the PTO is engaged, that narrows down the likely candidates. I'll have to check my photos to see which ones come into play, but the PTO housing bearings certainly do, so I would start there and replace the seal at the same time. Whilst you have the PTO shaft out, you can check the bearing on that (best to replace seal while you're at it). If that doesn't fix it, you're looking at removing and dismantling the gearbox (not as bad as it sounds).

Well I had it in neutral and pressed and released clutch and no whine ,but when I clutched and put pto in gear ,released the clutch the whine is quiet loud and seems to be coming from the front of the gear box / clutch. I love the way you say take out the gear box it's not as bad as it sounds !if the job is half as bad as it sounds its bad lol .
First things first now, a few bolt on bits mudguards etc and a good run and test of the engine and we will take if from there .

You can always drop the PTO gear housing from the bottom of the gearbox and check that out. Drain gearbox and rear axle, remove the PTO shaft then drop the box down. Be careful, it is heavy.

Well Ive got lots of bolt on goodies to fit first and put the wheels on and go for the long awaited spin.if ? Everything works as they should, ill do what brian says as the whine seems to be coming from that box . All the oils are white which I now know via this forum is caused by condensation and needs to be changed .So when I'm changing the oils ill take the pto shaft out and that box down . I hope new bearings and seals might be all I need.

When changing the white Nasty oil and it all drains out is there any plan / ideas as to
How to get all residues of the white oil out as I'm sure a lot will stay even with the bung opened.

When you remove the pto shaft and drop the pto housing to inspect the bearings and replace the seals, this would be an ideal time to clean out the rear axle and the tunnel that the pto shaft passes through. As you can see from the photo, a lot of gunge collects over the course of fifty years. Seems a shame to put new oil on top of that. I would whip the hydraulic lid off (more work!) and slosh in a can of degreaser and let it soak for a while before pressure washing (if you have access to one) from the top and from the front through the pto tunnel. You'll know then that all is clean and well in the rear end and you'll never have to revisit this part of the tractor again. It's worth reflecting on the fact that this is the business end of the tractor, where all the work passes through. It's also the sump for the hydraulic pump.

Oh deep down I know your right a Aidrian , and I will do what you sugggest as its all about having confidence in the machine . Thanks for the tips and ill keep you posted on my decision . I must try to get it up and running and a proper running test first and as things are getting busy here I seem to have less time to spend on it at the moment .

Couldn't you leave the old oil in the rear axle for the time being? This would allow you to test your rebuilt engine and take stock. You could then look at the pto whine issue when you have time.
You must be dying to hear the engine roar back into life!

I'm not sure is this the way a forum works if I just keep updating on the one post .but I got the tractor running on her own the new 2nd clutch is perfect the engine is running great and my brakes are working fine so its such a great feeling of accomplishment . NOW the PTO is still whining pretty bad when engaged but as with this tractor when I took it down the road there is also a whine from the axel / gearbox lol could both whines be conected ????

I've had a bit of time over Xmas and removed the pto gear box beneath the bell housing and all seems in order but then I lay beneath the tractor and I reached up in to the primary gearbox and the pto drive cog is loose and I'd say the bearing is knackered so I've now split the tractor again, for the 3rd time .I'm getting very quick at it now !. I assume this drive cog and shaft etc will come out with the primary gear box ? Will it be exceptionally heavy ? Any tips or info on this procedure would be great .on the plus side my knowledge of fordson majors has increased dramatically lol
