What connects here?

Post by baindale »

Hi All,

Just a quick question, what connects here? I have had my '56 Fordson New Major for a few months and noticed something missing/broken here. Seemed ok and didn't appear to be leaking, but after a power wash today it is now leaking oil at this point. I Googled and pictures show a plate here, others a little silver box and other shows a cable leading back. I thought this may be where a Tacho can connect, but I thought that was on the other side?

Can I can put a plate over here and close it off properly?

Thanks very much for your help!

Rev counter drive.

You could just fit a plate over it, either rev counter or hour meter were optional extras, normally it was just a plate there if you had neither fitted.

Never seen that pump cover before. Is it some aftermarket part?

Henk, I have seen a few of these before, I'm thinking they were for industrial motors. I see the injection pump drive is the silent type also.

I asume that the filler would mean that those engines use a oil lubricated diesel pump.

You would think so. Ether that or an inspection hole but I don't know what you would be inspecting in that area, its just looking down at the top of the cam box. Now I'm curios about the pigtail drain line, is it just broke off or was it purposely turned up to maintain a higher oil level in the cam box.....probably just broke.

That plate is for industrial pumps. It is used to put a small amount of Fusus oil into the pump if the engine is not going to be used for long periods or in some cases a breather is fitted there. It was not usually fitted on agricultural tractors. A case in point would be an industrial engine on a combine, we would drain the fuel system and put preserving oil in for the winter through that filler, then run for a while and seal everything up. Oil in the cam box would be diluted and disappear in a very short time. The pigtail has been broken I suspect, either that or someone has seen diesel dripping out and decided to seal it up.

Occasionally Simms would run low on pumps due to industrial action and so any pump that could be calibrated to fit an application would be used. In later years we saw CAV rotary pumps on Ford 3000 and 5000 tractors instead of the Minimec ones.
