ID an older engine in a New Major

Hi all,

I've just purchased a New Major Diesel with the intention of a working resoration but am having trouble identifying the engine. The castings on the tractor indicate a September 1953 build (L1U near the clutch and L4U under the seat)
The engine however has a casting marks E1ADDN-6015-G on the block and E1ADDN-6050 on the head. Above the diesel pump the hand stamped engine number is 624EB1321 and above the dynamo is the cast into the block is the number D27H which seems to indicate something like a 1940's engine?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Welcome Gatty,

You are right about the casting code of the tractor.
I think you have a replacement engine. The engine number tells me nothing, but if we could use the same code it would be a April 1962 engine.
Do you have pictures of both sides of the engine?

That engine looks like it may have come from a truck as it looks like it has another pump bolted to the rear of the fuel pump which could be part of the truck brake system. That's why the stamped engine number doesn't make sense as they ran a different number sequence to the tractors, we do have some truck experts on the forum so they may be able to help you more on the engine. The tractor looks about right for the dates you have on casting codes with what i can see in the picture. If it is a truck motor it will have a few more hp than a standard tractor from 1953 as the trucks had a special intake manifold fitted if it's still on there, and adjustments to other parts also .

That is indeed a later truck engine, the brake vacuum pump on the rear of the injection pump. the lift pump driving off the injection pump and the Minimec injection pump says to me early 1962 Thames Trader.

so in that case the ££££ question is it terrible to keep it as is or for originality do we need to source another engine
it runs fine seems a shame to disturb

Depends what you intend to do with it.

If you are going to show it then the engine is not original as it left the factory. Saying that, if you got a replacement engine of the tractor date it will be 60 years old and you would need injection pump, water pump and many other internal components as these parts from your engine will not be the same if you were looking to transfer them onto your replacement engine.

If you want to work her then leave it as it is, this engine will give you 10hp more than the original engine so you have more power.

hi. I have just got a fordson power major with this pump on it. it's a air braking system made buy clayton dewandre. the system is identical to that used on many commercial vehicles. the exhauster creates a vacuum in the tank and the trailer brakes are applied by created by the inlet manifold but with a spark ignition engine the vacuum can be created by the inlet manifold but with the diesel it is not as easy, hence the exhauster. the unit was intended for industrial applications - I've seen one or two a long time ago. some of the threshermen up in Scotland had the same equipment on their tractors and threshing machines expressly where they were operating in hilly conditions. it's is certainly a rare item nowadays.
