1954 major diesel throttle linkage

Post by johnboy »

I have a 1954 major diesel. The throttle linkage runs from the r/t hand side hand control lever via a rod which connets to a transverse lever through the engine block which then picks up on the l/h side a verticle link to the lever which operates the butterfly which in turn controls engine revs. The transverse rod has broken off on the l/h side. The question is, "can this transverse rod be removed from the block and replaced, If so, how. Does it run in a hollow drilling or through a brass shell." It appears to me that the actual rod is about 1/8th inch dia and the brass about 3/8th. I understand that it may run through the coolant channels. I also understand that it is possible to rout new linkage behind the engine block." If anybody has any advice / knowledge of how to overcome the problem would be be appreciated.

The rod runs in a tube cast into the block and can be removed by taking off the injection pump then the adapter, then drawing the rod to the manifold side.

You cannot fit the later linkage on your tractor without modification. The early engines do not have the tapped mounting holes cast into the engine block.

thanks Brian, you are right, I have checked the block (behind battery holder) with fingers and could'nt feel drillings which I know are present on some majors. You refer to the adapter, what part is that ? In your experience will removal be achievable and streightforward or am I likely to encounter rusting which may inhibit withdrawel of the rod.

It is going to be slightly different on yours as Henrietta is a Petrol/Kerosene but she has an adapter that links the rod to the governor, you should have just the throttle rod. You can see the end of the rod, with a flat end, in the picture. The rod should pull straight out but after 60 odd years there may be some rust. Be a bit careful as the cast housing through the block might have eroded internally and rough handling may cause a leak out of the ends. There are no seals.
