New member, and super major - cross shaft seals.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so thought I'd introduce myself, I live in Surrey in the UK, and have a small collection of tractors, I've recently added a few to the list and am slowly getting them all up and together, I've got four super majors all have been restored at some point but are throwing various issues up,mainly due to lack of use and/or being stood.

Two of my tractors have iffy cross shaft seals, a 1963 new performance and a 1959 super major, can anyone advise how to change the seals without taking too much off! Can I replace them without removing the shaft? (and I suppose the rear wheels?)

Yes, you need to remove the shaft.
Drain rear axle.
Remove wheels. They need to come off, as they block the line of the shaft.
Remove clutch and brake assemblies.
Withdraw shaft, extract old seals, renew, and reassemble.
Leave notes for the next generation and never worry about this job again!

This page just recently, we had a big discussion on this whole subject, the only thing I could add is that my fordson has the break drums beside my wheel hubs and I did not have to remove or dismantle them to carry out the task.
