See this little blue tractor next to your address bar...?

Post by Oscar »

Well, that was made by Rick (a.k.a. Meanderer).

It's called a favicon and many websites use one. Rick figured we could use one, and now we've got one. Many thanks, Rick!

Oscar

Actually, I can only see it using my Firefox browser as I normally do. When I tried my IE6 browser it doesn't show. I did all the things like cleared history (Internet options>General> Clear History button), removed all previous Bookmarks for Fordson pages and rebooted. Have done it a number o times and it still won't work.
I've made favicons for other sites and they all work in both browsers. :?

Anyone see it with IE6 ????

This is what you are looking for. It should appear at the start of the Address Bar, the TAB on your Browser window, in your history list and your Bookmarks/Favorites (once you've deleted the old bookmark and re done it).

Rick
The wheels are the wrong color! I sure hope the grilles aren't orange
I like it, Rick. I even have a little tractor in my Bookmarks folder!
I switched to IE for a few minutes ( I can't stand it for much longer) and I don't have a little Fordson there, either. It works great with Firefox, though.

A Google search informs me of the following:
While Internet Explorer can automatically locate and display favicons in the root directory, it won't always do that (just another quirk, courtesy of Microsoft). To increase the probability that IE will always handle favicons as it should, add these two lines into the head section of your web site:

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
I inserted these two lines in the proper file, but still cannot see the favicon with Internet Explorer :stress: . It works flawlessly with other browsers though. Interestingly, when I use the "IE tab" plugin for Firefox (which emulates IE through Firefox) the icon disappears as well.

Oscar,
There is so much written about this subject re trying to get it to work with IE browsers. Yet they all say to do what I had previously suggested to you and what you wrote above.
Well, I never use IE these days BUT the majority of people still do. We (this site), is not on it's own I tell ya! I tried lots of Big Name Company websites that don't show up either. BUT wait. My other sites I've built do show up! The difference being that I have a slightly different Specification in my Header. So try up loading this one. ....

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://fordsontractorpages.nl/favicon.ico">

Now the other thing you and everyone else might have to do is delete their previous bookmark in favorites and re bookmark it.

Let's hope that fixes it. (and let me know when you've done it pls)

Rick

Ah, yes. I should have spotted that myself. Anyway, I've added the www but alas, no change.

Oh, well. Many visitors here use Mozilla and perhaps this will encourage the IE users to jump ship :D.

An expected confirmation: I can see it on Firefox but not on IE.

Did not see it before, it's on since tonight. I'm using IE 7 over here.

Yes everyone should be able to see the icon now. It was made compatible with IE browsers 24 hrs ago.

However, there could be some resulting confusion:
The new Favicon is the same size as the little image showing earlier in this thread except it now has Orange Wheels and whitish background. If that's what you see then well and good. If you are using IE browser and only see it in the TAB on the page window, then use your mouse to drag the image from the start of the address bar to the main window where your page is being displayed and it should change at the address bar to match the TAB one.

IF you have Firefox and you are still seeing the first version (grey wheels and yellowish background) then you can choose to leave that one as is by doing nothing. If you want to change to the Orange Wheeled one, then you need to follow the following instructions carefully. (NOTE: There is only the orange wheel image on the website; the white wheeled one is embedded in your computer's files).

(Firefox only)
Go to Bookmarks and delete any bookmark you have for the Fordson Pages or Forum.
Go to History and select Show All History. Click Organise and Select ALL. When ALL files in the window are hightlighted, use your delete button.

THEN close all Firefox windows.

(Deleting Cache Files)
Right click on START button and choose Explore.
The expolorer program window should open at the reference point of Start Menu file folder. (Not where you want to be but don't move until you can visually scan where you need to go.)
Look up the list until you see Local Settings. Click and open this folder.
Below I've shown the path that exists on my computer to get to where you need to go.... You can pick up the path from where I've used Bold Type for the Local Settings. Continue until you have openened the Cache(2) folder I've marked as red.
Now, use either the Edit in the menu bar or use CTR+A keys to select all the files in that folder. Once highlighted, press delete key.
The problem should now be resolved. Just open Firefox again, type the Fordson address into the bar and the Orange wheeled tractor should appear. If not, you'll need to repeat the process of deleting HISTORY again, closing FF and clearing all the files in both the Cache(2) and the Cache folders. If you like, you can delete all the files in both those folders to make sure the first time around .... it can't do any harm. And you could even restore from Recycle Bin if you needed.

C:\Documents and Settings\Rick\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\********.default\CacheCache(2)OfflineCache

It's all part of the learning curve these days, eh!

Hello,

Yes I have the little tractor in the bar now. First I have used Firefox for a while and the icon showed up, but I could not log in. So I went back to Windows IE. Now even the icon shows up on the shortcut on my desk for the chat box.
Kind regards, Henk

Rick,
The orange wheeled tractor showed up on Firefox for me a while ago, but I thought I'd wait and see if anyone else noticed it.

Henk,
I had the same problem of not being able to log in with Firefox. Here's how you fix it:
-Open Firefox
-Click "Tools" at the top of the page.
-Click "Options"
-Click "Privacy" at the top of the box
-Click "Show Cookies"
-Scroll down the list to fordsontractorpages.nl Click to highlight it.
-Click "Remove Cookies" on the left.
Now you should be able to log on the the BB with Firefox.
