Silly quesetion #4 - how big a mower ?
Silly quesetion #4 - how big a mower ?
Apologies for the basic questions
I am considering buying a smallish flail mower for the (super) Dexta
What size would be a comfortable fit please?
Would a 6 foot cut be too big ?
many thanks again

The limiting factor might be the weight, Too heavy to lift or front wheels in the air!

There will be others as well, HP, for example.

My 1959 Dexta handles a (non flail) 5ft Fleming Topper very well, it weighs 246 kg and lifts it easily. Hope this helps

Alex,
As long as it has cat 1 links it will be ok I guess.

I think 6 foot on a flail mower might be asking a bit much of the engine depending on the height of grass you are trying to cut. Mine will run a 6 foot Tarup drum mower just about in hay crops, but a flail will take more power.

I run a 1.25m flail mower on my Dexta. No problem at all with weight or when mowing grass.
When mowing really, really thick rushes then it has occasionally struggled for power.

Thanks Wullie
That will be my main task for it - rushes. I anticipate that once done, it should be easier to keep on top of them with regular mowing
Trying to convince myself that a 1.45 might be better than the 1.25 though

You only need to use full width of mower the first time round the field. After that take a narrower swath if the tractor’s struggling.

or a shorter, full-width cut and do 2 passes - would that work?

Actually I just checked mine and see it is 1.45m, I must have been thinking of something else when I thought it was 1.25.
I also noticed that you have a Super Dexta, mine is a standard Dexta so I have a few hp less than you.
I don't think you will have any problem at all with a 1.45m flail mower.
