Front engine oil seal

Post by Wim »

Hi there,

Has anybody ever removed a front engine oil seal without removing the front axle or radiator?
Also has someone got the dimensions of it?
I have put in new one when I rebuild the engine, but it didn't leak before the rebuild but it does now.
The fan belt pulley was not worn, so I suspect it was not 100% perfect or I've damaged it whilst installing it.
It looks asif it should be do-able but has somebody done it yet?

Thanks,

Wim

Front engine oil seal

Post by The Swanndri Guy »

Had a look at my 1963 Super Dexta,to do the front engine oil seal it would be easier to remove the radiator and remove the front axle than attempting to do it with radiator and front axle in place.(How would you undo the front pully bolt, would you have enough room to remove the pulley, and how would you remove the seal with the front axle and radiator in place?)So I guess the short answer to your last question is "no". Cheers TSG.

hi,

yes, it looks pretty tight but I think the the bolt can be undone via the hole to crank the engine by hand and this with a shortened socket and an extensionpiece.
I will try it tomorrow and keep you posted.
Getting the seal looks a bit more difficult, but I'll try with a prybar.
As said, I'll give it a go and if it doesn't work then there is always the normal way left.

cheers,

Wim

Hi ,

Yes it is possible to change the seal without removing the front axle and radiator.
I just had to shorten a socket to undo the bolt, but then getting the old seal out was a bit fiddly.
The size of the seal is 50.8mm (2")in and 69.85mm (2 3/4")outside diam. and was metal casing.
This was not available here of the shelf so I used a metric 50 mm by 70mm with a rubber lined casing , and pressed that in by using the crankshaftbolt with an ring. This has worked a treat and everything is working again without oil leaking past.
The 0.8mm inside difference doesn't seem to be a problem, but the seal is stretched only 0.4mm from its designdistance.
Some might think why, but this way saved me unbolting steeringarms, radius arms , radiatorhoses( and coolant loss) and supporting and undoing the front axle and supporting the engine.
The whole job took less than 3 hours.

Regards,

Wim
