changing clutch

I had a busy day today taking out the engine of the super 4. I ordered the new live drive clutch to have it installed.
I also wanted to change the oil seals of the gearbox shaft.

Not an easy job :s

i cleaned up the front of the gearbox. will look tomorrow if there is oil coming from the big gasket, I hope not!

From memory, your wall is a very good match to the wall around County's machine shop! The floor though was concrete and not brick pavers - you'll have to work on that.

yes It's the new type. will make a picture while fitting it.

Well the brick pavers are a bit a pain in the ass to move the engine crane.

Good stuff, that clutch doesn't look that bad. Pretty clean bell housintg too.
Keep at it, the seals shouldn't be too owkward.

I've done the seals this evening.
Old ones were not that soft anymore.
Had to wiggle a bit to get the shaft out. Oil is still in the gearbox. Seems like the level of the oil is about the same as the shaft.

I'm still waiting for the bearings to arrive, hope to continue soon.

Looking good. Yes the oil level is the same level as the bottom of the input shaft hole, we saw it fixing Super Billy's new seal. There is no need to drain any oil to replace the input shaft seal or gasket.

No need for draining the oil, is really a relief. with the underbeam of the county it's a messy job.
I won't change the gaskets, because that means a lot of work.
At the moment there is no oil coming out of this place.

We didn't change the gasket either and it's still dry. Oil changes must be pretty messy with that huge frame in the way!

While I have the engine out, I took it apart to see what needs to be redone. Still in the progress to look at all parts what to replace etc..

this thread has been a while. I'm almost at the end of the job.
Engine has been fully rebuild and new clutch is installed.
Just need to put the engine back in the tractor and reinstall radiator and stuff.
Did take a lot of pictures, will post them when I got it all done.

Is it a very late County Super 6 because it has the later engine in it and not the 590E that most were fitted with?? County it is believed bought up a years supply of skid units when Ford announced they were discontinuing production of the Major range, and this enabled this model of County to be produced until late 1965. However the 590E engine continued in production until 1967 alongside the new type industrial engines, so is it that it has simply had an engine change?

Shepp, it is originally an early 1963 super 4. I got this info from the County -Osbourne company. They checked the county serial number. At a later stage it got the 6cil industrial engine fitted. The same engine is usedin the ford 8100, that was built by County.

Hi Mathias, thanks for that, an interesting history. Another thought, I had always assumed that County would not have fitted a live drive gearbox as the dual clutch with the aluminium cover was not a very robust thing and would not be able to stand up to the heavy duty work that County tractors were used for, but your tractor has a dual clutch? I remember going to a plant and machinery sale held monthly in the late 1980's, and one of the lots was a New Performance Super 4 that had come in direct from North West Water the local water utility company. It had been used around the reservoirs and had only done about 1200 hours, on 12 inch tyres 36 or 38 inch diameter, beautifully clean but it was not live drive. It made £1250 from memory and if it had been live drive I would have bought it to use - I should have bought it anyway of course and put it away!
