I think I need a new one. Seems like the stut is broken and I only have clicks when I try to start the tractor, but no luck so far.
Is this model still available? I just seem to find one with the start button on it.

Looks like this one should have a button on it too (and all of them did when new). See if the nut moves ok and try to clean everything up. Hopefully you might get something after that, but if not you want a replacement lookalike with the same Lucas part number as stamped on the body (I think it should be 76411 but that might be the earlier cast type).

Looks like it's had a bad connection on the left post (as we view the picture), it's got very hot and the post has moved in the plastic. I would suspect the high current terminal no longer makes the connection inside properly. I've got to change mine at soon as it has suffered a similar fate.
Sounds like a good chance, could also be a broken post, but probably less likely. If it were one of ours I would probably take it apart and see inside, but that's just my way of thinking. Definitely worth using the correct solenoid, for earlier tractors (before September 61 roughly) the housing is a die-cast single piece with mounting bracket rather than the subsequent pressed housing with point welded bracket.

I don't know if I'm missing something here, but I can't see the high current cable leading from the damaged terminal. The screw on the bulkhead suggests this has been replaced before and looking at the wiring some more investigation may be needed.
If I'm right in what I'm thinking there should be a heavy blue cable similar to the 'good' terminal attached to the bad one - and if it's been replaced by the red wire with the crimp terminal - that could explain the overheating and damage.
I see what you mean, but as I see it I don't think the battery is actually connected in the pic. Mathias will no doubt put us right on that. The wires I see there are probably the regulator ones as well as the feed wire to the ignition switch.

in this picture the cable is probably taken off. I need to put a new crimping end on it. Might get that fixed first and use the solenoid from another tractor to see if it's working.
All might be caused by a bad connection, as there where sparks there in the past :s
The tractor is now a bit far away from home, so that doesn't make it easy to work on it.
