Aux Service Control Spool that the Knob screws onto.

Post by Mervyn Spencer »

Hi Guys,
I have recently bought a new Aux Service Control Knob, to replace the remaining metal plate that had a Bakelite mold on it those years back. I have since noticed that this screw on remaining plate has been welded back on. Obviously I would have to find/purchase a replacement spool so as to screw on my new knob. How difficult is it to remove the offending spool. I apologize for the long winded description.

To take the spool out you need to remove the roll pin that holds the cap in. Beware that there are two spools, one with one o-ring (E170-GF-9) and one with two (E216-GF-9). The two o-ring one was to avoid an internal leak to lift the arms in external position, but it was discontinued soon after. They take different o-rings (one 87034-ES or two 87016-ES) and it was decided to not fit the second o-ring to the two o-ring type. 87034-ES is 0.562" ID and 0.103" thick and 87016-ES is 0.625" ID and 0.07" thick. All this was in the latter half of 1962.

Sandy you are a star. A lot to take in but I shall print your response and try and digest it. We are now fortunate to have a branch of Agriline Products in South Africa based down in our winelands area. I did chat to one of their reps this week, I just need to check what colour paint marking the spool has on it. I'm off to the tractor club this morning to see if I can remove the spool, so wish me good luck. Chat again later.

You can determine the colour by measurement, it's as follows:
colour __________ spool OD _____________________ bore
green ___________ 0.7482"-0.7485" ____________ 0.7487"-0.749"
white ___________ 0.7485"-0.7488" ____________ 0.749"-0.7493"
blue ____________ 0.7488"-0.7491" ____________ 0.7493"-0.7496"
yellow __________ 0.7491"-0.7494" ____________ 0.7496"-0.75"
orange __________ 0.7494"-0.7497" ____________ 0.75"-0.7503"
Handy to have them there, makes it easier to get parts from them.

Thank you Sandy for the spool specs, looks like mine maybe the green version. I'm measuring 0,748". I have three pictures that I would like to post but am battling a bit, long time since I last posted on the forum.

I see that, strange knob, that needs to come off to get the cap off (watch out for the ball and spring). Pics worked fine, but would be better using hotlink for forums.

Thanks for the heads up with regards the spring and ball, unfortunately they were non existent :( . With regards to the strange knob my plan is either to grind the weld using a Dremel or a small lathe. Failing that I will contact the lads down at Agriline to see what they have.

Hi folks,
I had forgotten that we have a retied tractor mechanic(MF) who is a club member and living in our retirement village. He was kind enough to cut just behind the weld and exposed the thread and bingo there was sufficient thread to screw the new knob on.. He was able to replace the one "o" ring that is visible on the photograph. I was wrong about there been no ball and spring in front of the cap. Last evening I was moving the cap on the rod and noticed/felt that the ball and spring was present. One happy feller now not having to try and source a replacement spool, end of chapter. Thanks to all those who showed interest in the post :D.

Glad it's sorted, we'll need to look at o-rings there too some time.

Hi Sandy, sure will do. As I mentioned the one "o" that's visible was changed , its the one under the cap that I will have to keep an eye on. I want to thank you very much for your guidance with my little issue Sandy, you have been a great help to all the members .

Ah, sorry, I meant we need to here on Davie and Super Billy! If no leaks are apparent no need to do anything.
