Gasket behind seat?

Post by devondom »

Hi

I removed a bolt from behind the seat of my FMD. It is a silver one
with a soft head. Is this for filling with PTO oil? There is a lot of solid old oil built up so I started to remove the plate (with seven bolts) the silver bolt is in to clean it. However it looks like there is a thick gasket holding the plate on. Do I need a replacment gasket or
can I use Gasket sealent when I put the plate back on?

Thanks
Dominic

The "bolt" is the filler plug for the whole rear axle. The housing is of no real concern, its just a cover.

If you think you need to clean out the rear axle, remember it goes right forward to the gearbox so cleaning that housing will make little difference.

What you may need to clean is the pump intake filter which is underneath the drawbar. It has another plug in it to drain the roughly 12 gallons of oil out. Then you remove the four bolts and drop the filter out for cleaning.

You can put about 5 gallons of kerosene (paraffin) mixed with a little oil, into the back end and drive around a little. This was the official Fordson way but you still need to remove the bottom plate to clean it out,
