wireing trouble
hi im having a problem with the wireing of my super major, ths switch on the top of the starter motor gets red hot and melts t,he wires ,when the starter lever is pressed and wont turn over. when you operate the solenoind manuly and hold the lever down the engine flys round any ideas anybody thanks
Welcome to the board.
The switch on top of the starter only switches the solenoid on so there should be no "power" passing through it, only a very small current. Nowhere near enough to melt wires. Somewhere you have a dead short to earth.
Of the two wires to the switch, one is power from the ignition switch, the other is feed to the solenoid. As you do not get clouds of smoke and burning when you turn the ignition on, it would indicate that the wire from the ignition switch to the starter is OK.
As your problem starts when you press the starter switch, it would indicate that the problem is in the single wire to the solenoid small terminal.
Try another piece of wire from the switch to the small terminal. If everything works then your first wire is faulty. If everything smokes, then your solenoid is faulty.
