What is this?

Post by Steve in Oz »

Hi
I am sure you all know what this part of my '55 FMD is, its attached to the injector pump...as I am new to the mechanical side of the tractor I need a little (LOT) of help. I tried to find it descibed on the manual etc...but its a bit hard if I dont know what its called.
Is it a breather or oil fill?
Does it need maintenance? and should it have a bit of rag stuck in the top of the nozzle?
And whats the big bolt underneath for....

Now that you have picked yourselves up of the floor....hehe...any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Stephen

Hey Steve, looks like the tube that the crank case breather is attached to on my '59 power major.

Unless I'm looking at the picture wrong, it looks like the remains of the drive for the proof meter to me.

Looks like a rev counter drive as it fits onto the gear on the auillary drive shaft that drives the pump.

The screw is just a gallery blanking screw.

Thanks guys...I have put another photo up showing a bit more of where it is located on the engine, circled in red.

It sounds like it is just an accessory and not something that fell off, which is what I was worried about.

If it is for the rev counter what type should be used?

Is it oiled by the engine oil as well as per the injectors?

thank you all..

It is nothing to do with the injection pump, it just drives of a skew gear that drives the oil pump. You could take it off and just put a plate on as most Majors have.

The access was there for either an hour meter or proof meter drive.
