Starter Motor

Post by Bensdexta »

Some Qs please:

1). Do I need to remove the starter to separate the engine from the clutch housing? There's no mention of this in the manual, but it looks like the starter bolts go into the clutch housing?

2). How many bolts hold the starter on? What size are the nuts and can I get the back ones with ordinary tools?

3). Is it worth reconning my 40yr old starter or might I as well buy a new one? Can anyone recommend someone to recon a starter in UK?

Your advice appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ben

Ben,

Further to your questions:-

1.The starter motor has to be removed.

2. There are three bolts securing the starter motor, probably 7/16" UNC or UNF I can't say for sure. You shouldn't have a problem removing the bolts if you have a decen't socket set. Personally I prefer 3/8" square drive sockets for this as they are lighter than 1/2" sq. drive sockets and easier to use in tight corners. Also half moon obstruction wrenches are handy for the back nut and where acess is difficult.

3. I would remove the starter motor and take it to an auto electrician in order to be stripped down and examined. It may only need stripping and cleaning, after all these years I think it would be unwise to connect it to a battery without openeing it up.

You should be able to find auto electrician in your area in yellow pages, ask at your local garage if they can reccomend anyone.
As most spares are still available for these starters I would keep the original unit in preference to a new replacement.

I have had starter motors refurbished by our local auto electrician at a cost of about £150.00.
